Marine Research Equipment Technician

JASCO is currently looking for Marine Research Equipment Technicians at our Queensland, Australia location.

JASCO Applied Sciences has provided research and consulting services for predicting, assessing, and mitigating underwater sound for nearly 40 years. We are a recognized global leader in the niche field of marine acoustics, a position achieved through our commitment to science, technology, and communication.

To meet the needs of our rapidly growing and successful business, we are currently looking for two Marine Research Equipment Technicians in the Brisbane, Queensland office.

Project work is often related to environmental assessments for oil and gas activities and marine construction, including the growing field of renewable energy. The development of offshore windfarms in Australian waters is expected to comprise a significant proportion of work in the coming years. The successful applicant will be provided with opportunities to further broaden their expertise in a supportive environment which encourages initiative and collaboration.

You are required to work closely within the JASCO project and equipment team, participating in the organisation, testing, preparation, maintenance and operation of a variety of passive acoustic and oceanographic instrumentation systems and associated moorings. Additionally, for the right candidate, there is the option to participate in the deployment, recovery, operation and troubleshooting of acoustic systems and other oceanographic instrumentation at sea.

Senior Technician Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical system readiness support.

  • Provide first-line remote support to field team members regarding equipment in the field.

  • Maintain, repair, and calibrate oceanographic equipment used for underwater surveillance and scientific data collection.

  • Set up and operate specialized and standard test equipment to diagnose, test, and analyze the performance of electrical and electronic components, assemblies, and other specialist monitoring equipment.

  • Solder wiring, connectors, circuit board components, cables, and wire harnesses as required.

  • Conduct life tests (burn-ins) on assemblies, and record and analyze results.

  • Assemble, package, unpack, and/or disassemble oceanographic equipment and moorings in preparation for shipping prior to deployment and after recovery.

  • Demobilize monitoring equipment, including participating in the download and data quarantine process for returned equipment.

  • Clean, inspect, and maintain equipment and components through visual inspection, proof, and load testing as required.

  • Calibrate electronic equipment and systems according to technical manuals and written instructions.

  • Manage inventory: maintain records for existing and new equipment, including preparing purchase orders and keeping inventory of materials and equipment for deployment or return from the field.

  • Create and maintain documentation as required, following JASCO processes and procedures.

  • Use and maintain hand tools and portable power tools.

  • Set an example in adhering to quality and health & safety policies and procedures, including maintaining cleanliness and organization in the warehouse.

  • Perform other duties as required.

Junior Technician Responsibilities:

  • Support the other technicians and scientists working in the Brisbane warehouse.

  • Maintain, repair, and calibrate oceanographic equipment used for underwater surveillance and scientific data collection under instruction.

  • Follow procedures for testing electronic boards, recorders, hydrophones, and other specialist monitoring equipment.

  • Assist with the mobilization, assembly, packaging, unpacking, and/or disassembly of oceanographic equipment and moorings in preparation for shipping prior to deployment and after recovery.

  • Provide logistical support, including shipping documentation, organization, monitoring, accepting, and following up on deliveries.

  • Clean, inspect, and maintain equipment and components through visual inspection.

  • Manage inventory: maintain records for existing and new equipment.

  • Use existing documentation and follow JASCO processes and procedures.

  • Use and maintain hand tools and portable power tools.

  • Always adhere to quality and health & safety policies and procedures, including maintaining cleanliness and organization in the warehouse.

  • Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience

  • Degree or diploma in engineering (such as Diploma of Engineering – Technical), sciences, technology, or equivalent experience.

  • Formal First Aid Training & Qualifications (Preferred).

  • Australian drivers licence.

  • Optional forklift licence.

  • Keen attention to detail.

  • An understanding of warehouse operations and experience with hand and power tools.

  • Technician experience with sensitive equipment, particularly that used in marine environments.

  • Competent in Microsoft Office.

  • Team player attitude but with the resourcefulness and ability to work independently.

  • Excellent communications and presentation skills, and an ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with various team members at all levels of the business.

  • Initiative and self-motivation - we offer a lot of support at JASCO, however there will be times where decisions will need to be made confidently, quickly, and independently.

  • Ability to perform physically and mentally demanding tasks.

  • Excellent planning, organisational and communication skills. This role will require someone who can work across multiple systems, locations, timeframes, and functions, and complete different tasks simultaneously.

  • Australian citizen or permanent resident.

Optional Experience:

  • Experience in the deployment, recovery and mooring of oceanographic instrumentation.

  • Sea-going experience, ideally in support of passive sonar operations, scientific research, offshore wind development, or offshore oil & gas exploration.

  • Ability to perform physically and mentally demanding tasks at sea.

  • Current Offshore Survival and Medical Certificates (Preferred).

  • Able to obtain/maintain a Marine Medical Certificate (OGUK or Seafarer’s) and BOSIET training.

  • Ability to travel domestically or internationally as required.
